What to do if you are locked out of your unit

Last updated 28 August 2021

There is a lockbox for every unit so you have a spare key to your apartment in case you are locked out.

There are a series of lock boxes, one for each apartment. They are in the loading bay on the St Pauls St side, right at the back,  close to the entrance to Building A.

Please place a spare key to your apartment in your box. The 4 digit code was set by the  resident . The Village Manager  has your code if you forget it {so long as you have told him}. As with all other keys it should be updated regularly and tested after update.

It is only useful if you remember to put the key back after each use.

The loading bay is located to the left of the driveway entrance to the building behind reception. To get there without a key you need to walk along the driveway from the front of the building. If you live in Buildings C or D it is necessary to walk up the fire stairs up the western side of building B and down to the colonnade.  It may be easier to call a neighbour and use their key. Or else walk up the driveway (carefully)

EMERGENCY CONTACT PROCESS

MEDICAL • SAFETY CONCERN • FIRE HAZARD

 Last updated 5 December 2021

For After hour emergencies relating to medical emergencies, safety concerns, and fire hazards, please call emergency services (000) for immediate response.

Please provide the emergency services with as much information possible, to reduce the risk of confusion and delay in their response. You must state:

For example, you would say: “Unit 66, Building D, 57-63 St Pauls St, Randwick, 2031”

As a secondary response contact for a medical emergency, the Registered Nurse on duty can be contacted for First Aid on 9152 8300. This number will go to reception, and after hours will be automatically re-directed to the Registered Nurse on duty.

Again, this number is only to be used for emergency medical emergencies only, and I would encourage you not to use this avenue for purposes other than what it is meant for.

Power Outages

Due to residents'  concerns regarding the potential for a blackout given the recent news updates of the NSW Electricity Grid, the following reassurance was given to residents by St Basil's Management.

Our common areas are powered by back up generators and therefore the lifts will still work, the lights in hallways will still be on and the boom gate, front roller gate and foyer entry doors to each building will still work.
Your front door is battery operated and therefore will still work. You will, however, need to plan for a blackout in your individual units as these are not connected to our back up generators, therefore residents should ensure that they have battery operated lighting such as torches, food supplies that does not require cooking or heating, have enough clothing and blankets to keep warm and ensuring that you have a mechanism to contact emergency services (e.g. ensuring your mobile is fully charged) in the event you require assistance. St. Basil’s does not recommend the use of candles given the high risk of triggering the smoke alarms or potential for fire.

If you are using life support equipment such as:

• Oxygen concentrator

• Intermittent peritoneal dialysis machine

• Kidney dialysis machine

• Chronic positive airways pressure respirator

• Crigler najjar syndrome phototherapy equipment

• Ventilator for life support

• Any other equipment (whether fuelled by electricity or gas) that a registered medical practitioner certifies is required for life support, or a medical condition which requires continued supply of electricity and/or gas

Please ensure that you have registered with your energy provider so they can provide with assistance.

What to do in the event of death

                                   The Grove Residents Committee

November 1st, 2018

Dear Fellow Residents ,
Recently we all received a letter from Ryan about what to do in the event of a death.
Your committee has been involved in discussions with St Basil's about this subject but wanted to take a different approach in terms of providing you with instructions and information. We also need to correct some of the information that we were given.

Dear Friends, we are reluctant to confuse or distress you but feel that it is important to ensure that you have the correct information.

First of all, an EXPECTED DEATH is treated quite differently to an unexpected one as outlined by the NSW Justice Department, the NSW Funeral Directors' Association and legal advice.
An expected death at any time of day or night is when someone is cared for at home and where death is anticipated or was a reasonably expected outcome of a health related condition and who has been seen by a doctor during the previous 6 months.
There will have been time for the family or friends to plan their responses and talk it over with the GP beforehand. When such a death occurs there is NO need to call an ambulance or involve the police. Phone the GP who will come and sign a Verification of Death certificate. (this is not the Death Certificate). The GP will ask whether there is to be a cremation, in which case they will also sign a Cremation Certificate. Once those forms have been signed, you may phone the funeral director of your choice who will transport the body to their premises. Unfortunately the funeral directors in this area use Mercedes Sprint vans which are what most ambulances are, so there will be the same problems in terms of access. During-office hours, Ryan will help with escorting the funeral directors and help in any other way that he can.  It is important to know that there is no legal requirement for the body to be removed immediately. The loved ones may want some quiet time together or to wait for the arrival of a family member before arranging for the removal.

An UNEXPECTED DEATH is a completely different scenario. lf you are first on the scene, do not move or adjust the body because it is a potential crime scene.
Evacuate the area if necessary.
During office hours phone 9152 8301 to contact Ryan immediately. He will then take charge of the situation.

Out of office hours, regardless of whether a body is found in an apartment, a common area or a public space, the first response must be to call for an ambulance on 000, such a call automatically includes the police who will attend to determine whether the circumstances are suspicious. They will take full control of the situation and environment.  Meanwhile, phone the st Basil's emergency number 91529400 and ask them to access the Next of Kin details. The police will contact the Next of Kin (NoK) to ascertain the name and number of the person's GP.  If the GP is able to tell the police that the person had a health condition that could explain the death and had recently been seen by a doctor, the police will probably remove themselves from the situation.
A doctor will be called to sign a verification of death certificate before the body can be moved either by the funeral director of choice as advised by NoK or by an ambulance from the coroner's office if the police have any concerns. It is the responsibility of the Next of Kin to ensure that any special religious or cultural requests are understood so that the process is co-ordinated correctly.
ln the event of an emergency in a common area not resulting in death, whoever finds that person first should immediately phone 000 for an ambulance or 9152 8300 in office hours and 9152 9400 out of hours.

In the best interests of your family, emergency services, St Basil's and your fellow residents, we completely support St Basil's request that you supply them with the details of your Next of Kin or Enduring Guardian who have an important role to play in protecting your interests and dignity. We now live in a friendly community where the residents generally take a great interest in the well-being and security of their neighbours.

Yours very sincerely and on behalf of the Committee,

Richard Griffin       Penny Stanford

Chairman                 Secretary

PS: The information that your Next of Kin or Enduring Guardian should know:-
* The name and number of your GP or Medical centre that you attend.
* Name and number of  preferred funeral director.
* Whether you want a funeral or cremation and specific religious or cultural requests.
* The name and contact details of your solicitor or legal representative who has access to your will
